Students should understand that scale factor shows the multiplicative relationship between the dimensions of two figures as well as the multiplicative relationship between coordinates of corresponding points on a figure if the figures have the origin as their center of dilation. Students must understand how to express the rules for a dilation in algebraic form between two shapes on a coordinate plane.

Example

  • Quadrilateral ABCD with the origin as the center of dilation was used to create Quadrilateral A’B’C’D’.

    83c

Write a rule that represents the dilation that was applied to quadrilateral ABCD to create A’B’C’D’ and justify your thinking.
