T.I.P.S.

  • Lightbulb Students must be able recognize that a cube with side lengths of one unit is considered to be a unit cube and has one cubic unit of volume. They must also be able to recognize that the volume of a three-dimensional figure is the number of unit cubes needed to fill the figure without any gaps or overlaps.

Example

  • Aria is preparing to teach a lesson about finding the volume of three-dimensional figures. She plans to demonstrate her understanding of volume using some cubes and a shoe box. What are some key points for Aria to make in her demonstration?

5.6 Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to understand, recognize, and quantify volume. The student is expected to:

    (A) recognize a cube with side length of one unit as a unit cube having one cubic unit of volume and the volume of a three-dimensional figure as the number of unit cubes (n cubic units) needed to fill it with no gaps or overlaps if possible
